The Numismatics Department of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art has a rich heritage of cultural history. These are 174 thousand exhibits, which have been collected, stored, and analyzed by several generations of museologists since the day the museum was established here. The Department preserves works of historical and artistic value: the biggest collection of coins of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the world, which was transferred to the museum from the collection of M. A. Račkus, famous 14th-century treasures of Lithuanian money (Šančiai, Daugeliškės, Verkiai), 16th–20th c. medals, the most comprehensive collection of securities of the Republic of Lithuania (1918–1940), and the fund of historical Kaunas-based Lithuanian coin mint as well as the collection of postage stamps. This book not only helps to broaden the horizons in the fields of Lithuanian numismatics, heraldry, and phaleristics but also invites the reader to think about the relationship between the individual and the state, about the trace left by each of us in the history of the nation.
