The legend of Jonas Prapuolenis is intriguing and fascinating. This is a man who not only made Lithuania famous, but also managed to inspire modern furniture forms with the Lithuanian spirit. The compilers of the book “Jonas Prapuolenis. Studio” looked at the personality of J. Prapuolenis in photographs, showing the cabinetmaker's studio-workshop, which has been preserved in Kaunas to this day by his son Bangutis Prapuolenis.
Jonas Prapuolenis (1900–1980), one of the most prominent Lithuanian designers, was born into a family of small-scale farmers and inherited his artistic inclination from his parents (his father was a carpenter and his mother was a weaver). As a child, he wove colorful shawls from willows and carved spoons, salt shakers, cultivators, and sticks from birch or maple. After studying at the Kaunas Art School, J. Prapuolenis expanded his knowledge in Paris. The artist created furniture and interiors with a variety of functions. His furniture sets, while still alive, were considered modern and innovative. Their construction, shape, and decoration also have a distinct national flavor. J. Prapuolenis's work has been honored with significant international awards on several occasions.
