Lina Preišegalavičienė. The Life and Work of Vladimiras Dubeneckis (1888-1932)
In the monograph dr. architect Lina Preišegalavičienė reveals in detail the life and work of a well-known architect, artist, pedagogue, and pioneer of modern architecture and "national style", Vladimiras Dubeneckis. The creative period of a well-known artist was short (lasting just over a decade) but impressively prominent. One of the distinctive features of V. Dubeneckis' creative biography is that being a non-Lithuanian he became the first seeker of "national style" in Independent Lithuania. The known and unknown historical material accumulated in one place will encourage many to rethink the established knowledge of the history of Lithuanian architecture and art. The study is presented with an abundance of archival, bibliographic, and illustrative material (272 pages, 712 items, and 376 illustrations). The book is intended for art critics, culturologists, architects, art students, and the general public interested in the national culture of Independent Lithuania.
The Russian-born artist, who lived and worked in Kaunas from 1919 to 1932, left a solid creative legacy to Lithuania. The architect's most mature work, the Vytautas the Great Museum building in Kaunas (currently the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum and Vytautas the Great War Museum), has become an icon of Lithuanian statehood, and the proposed formulation of the "national style" has in many aspects become the contemporary collective taste of the Lithuanian population. The respect for the personality, life and creative legacy of V. Dubeneckis is a phenomenal phenomenon, as it began immediately after the artist's death in 1932 and took place regardless of the changing cultural and political situation.
It is paradoxical that until now we have not had a monograph examining the life and work of a universally respected personality. The known and unknown historical material collected in one place will encourage many to rethink the previously established knowledge of Lithuanian architecture and art history. The research is presented with extensive archival, bibliographical and illustrative material (272 pages, 712 positions and 376 illustrations). The book is intended for art historians, culturologists, architects, art students and the general public interested in the national culture of Independent Lithuania.
