Light through the glass ceiling. Magdalena Aviėtėnaitė (1892–1984) – creator of the image of the interwar state

The first comprehensive publication about Magdalena Aviėtėnaitė – an interwar Lithuanian diplomat, head of ELTA and one of the most prominent women in the civil service.

Based on archival documents and the latest research, the book reveals her contribution to shaping Lithuania’s international image and tells the story of professional leadership in a period when diplomacy was almost exclusively a male domain.

Magdalena Aviėtėnaitė is a Lithuanian-American, born in Lithuania, raised in the United States and educated in Switzerland. Arriving in independent Lithuania in 1920, she was immediately employed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Starting as a qualified translator, she rose to the position of department director and became the highest-ranking woman in the interwar Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The publication is richly illustrated and prepared in Lithuanian and English.
