Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Correspondence 1892-1910 Volume III

This publication presents for the first time the entire correspondence of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Totalling 291 letters, the correspondence is published in two volumes. The first volume consists of letters from 1892 to 1906, the earliest addressed to Count Mykolas Kleopas Ogiński, and the last to the artist's patron Bronisława Wolman. The second volume consists mainly of letters to his fiancée (and later his wife) Sofija Kymantaitė, the last one being a postcard written in the middle of February 1910.

The letters are presented in chronological order, which helps to reveal the nature of the relationship between the artist and his family, and with his friends, acquaintances and patrons, particularly his fellow composer and artist Eugeniusz Morawski. The extensive commentary and footnotes establish the place of the composer in the context of the society of his home town of Druskininkai, and in the artistic and intellectual milieus of Leipzig, Warsaw, Vilnius and St Petersburg.

The publication is abundantly illustrated. Indexes and a detailed catalogue of the letters are provided at the end of the second volume. Most of the letters are held in the National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum in Kaunas, Lithuania.
