A Woman and the Sky. The prison camp letters of Kazimiera Galaunienė (Kairiūkštytė) and her loved ones. 1953-1956

This is a book about the Soviet prison camp experience. It includes eighty-three let- ters: fifty-two written by Kazimiera Galaunienė (Kairiūkštytė), thirteen by her sister Janina, also imprisoned, and the rest by other women who shared their fate, as well as their relatives and loved ones. The letters published here were selected to show a wide range of personal experiences within the prison system and shed light not only on the lives of prisoners but also their friends and loved ones. This preserved correspondence helps us understand how much people live through the lives of others, supporting other people even as they themselves endure with the help of others. In committing to preserve these prison camp letters, Kazimiera demonstrated the imperative she felt to acknowledge what human life truly is or can be, and her own courage not to hide old wounds.
