Arūnas Vaitkūnas (1956 - 2005) is one of the most famous Lithuanian painters. In his own way, he continued the tradition of European and Lithuanian Expressionist painting developed by big and small names, in which the artistic content is determined by the tension between the motif, composition and the very fabric of oil painting. Best known for his dramatic portrayal of derelict, decaying staircases, the artist left a large and diverse creative legacy. Having reclaimed the power of emotional expression for the traditional genres of interior, landscape, portrait and still-life painting, he intensively balanced between realism and abstraction.
