The book is dedicated to life and works of Valerija Čiurlionytė-Karužienė, the sister of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. It reflects the period of unfavourable and joyful events for Lithuania – the Russian Tsarist regime, miseries caused by WWI and WWII and the joy after the restoration of independent Lithuania. This was the time Valerija lived and worked in. She contributed a lot to the preservation of her famous brother’s works. She was a durable teacher, experienced museum worker, art critic and promoter of her brother’s creative legacy. The book dedicates a great deal of attention to the Čiurlionis family, the exhibit life of Čiurlionis’ works. Karužienė’s activities and museum topicalities of those times are extensively discussed. To this end, letters published by various persons and unpublished articles as well as remembrances about Karužienė and people surrounding her become very significant. Letters by Karužienė and other persons, articles, extracts from articles, remembrances are presented chronologically according to the stages in her life and activities. The author has selected the material, which best reflects the then events, work specifics and opportunities, life attitudes. This book also contains photos of Valerija Čiurlionytė-Karužienė’s family, friends and colleagues, as well as previously unpublished paintings and drawings. The public is provided with an extensive picture of life and cultural activities of Valerija Čiurlionytė-Karužienė, where her brother Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis occupies a very significant place.
